Course Description:

This course is designed to provide healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to perform intravenous (IV) therapy and blood withdrawal safely. The course will cover the theoretical principles of IV therapy and blood withdrawal, as well as practical skills and techniques needed to perform these procedures competently.

Participants will learn about the anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system and the indications, contraindications, and complications of IV therapy and blood withdrawal. The course will also cover IV fluids, equipment, and devices used in IV therapy, including catheters, pumps, and IV bags.

Hands-on training will teach participants how to properly insert and remove IV catheters, monitor and maintain IV therapy, and safely withdraw blood samples. Additionally, the course will cover infection control and safety measures, including proper hand hygiene, sterile technique, and disposal of contaminated materials.

Upon completing this course, participants will have the skills and knowledge to perform IV therapy and blood withdrawal safely and competently, in compliance with applicable regulations and standards. Participants will receive a certificate of completion indicating their achievement in this specialized area of healthcare.

Course Format:

This is a hands-on course that combines theoretical and practical instruction. The course is taught by experienced healthcare professionals and consists of lectures, demonstrations, and supervised practice sessions.

Course Duration:

This 3-day, 36-hour course is delivered in part online (self-paced) and part classroom.

Because this course results in 36 (CE) credit hours, each day will consist of a full day of classroom time – breaks will be offered, but will not form part of the class hours.

In order to pass, students will need to demonstrate, successfully, IV insertions and blood withdrawals. Students will practice inserting IVs and drawing blood on one another. Students who, for whatever reason, would prefer not to have these procedures performed upon them, can bring someone with them for the clinical portion of the course.

Course Prerequisites:

Participants must be licensed healthcare professionals (such as nurses or medical assistants) with a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology and a familiarity with medical terminology.
